You Don't Have to Offer Developers Everything!

You Don't Have to Offer Developers Everything!

Do you need to recruit developers in your job? If so, you've probably noticed that employee benefits like flexible hours, free lunches, or a generous training budget aren't as uncommon as they were a few years ago. But how can you compete for capable developers if you can't offer several of the benefits more often requested by programmers? Often HR managers even apologize to the applicant for not being able to offer some opportunities. Many applicants appreciate honesty, but does it really help you when recruiting developers? Instead, impress with a positive recruiting pitch in which you don't apologize, but instead highlight more what makes you special and what you can offer developers.

Focus on your benefits

Don't apologize for not offering a remote working option in your development department, for example, when you know full well that developers value this very benefit. Part of team building is deciding what you want to be good at and where you might not be so good. If you decide against a remote culture because of a poor technical infrastructure, or the demanding nature of communication, this may not be attractive to some developers, but may be an ideal circumstance for others. The same goes for other perks and benefits your development department may or may not want to offer. When recruiting developers, don't assume that you're out of the running because your overall package isn't as "attractive" as your competitors'

Take a step back

Sell your work culture! Why not talk about how collaborative the development team is and how quickly things move in your company because you communicate face-to-face? That's a huge advantage in terms of speed and career growth for any developer.

Take a step back and think about what makes your job opportunity so unique for tech professionals. Maybe you don't serve lunch, but maybe your developers can work on their own projects. You may not be able to support remote workers, but you may be able to offer childcare. Whether you're writing to a developer via email or crafting a job offer, highlight the things your company offers developers instead of explaining why you can't offer other benefits.
