Size and Roles: Wien Digital has around 1,100 employees and serves as the ICT service provider for the administrative and health institutions, including municipal hospitals, in the city of Vienna. It is divided into 5 business areas, with developers primarily working in the Basic Development & Architecture and Services business areas. There is also a specialized team, PACE, for fast-track developments, and a focus on security is maintained through WienCERT.

Teams typically consist not only of developers but also include business analysts, test managers, service and application managers. Team sizes generally range from 8 to 15 people.

Organization and Structure: Founded in 2018 through the merger of three major ICT departments of the city, Wien Digital is designed to facilitate agile and modern working and development methods. The organization emphasizes high autonomy and flexibility for teams, groups, and business units. Agile methodologies are applied where possible, and an agile organization based on the SAFe model has been established.

Distinctive Aspect - Agility and Customer Orientation: Wien Digital's advantage lies in its ability to align itself customer- and service-oriented due to its recent establishment. The organization aims for high autonomy and flexibility to enable short processes and project durations.

Recruiting

Integration in Recruiting Process: Wien Digital handles recruitment internally through its own HR team. This allows the organization to strategically incorporate the needed skills into the recruiting process and identify the most suitable candidates.

Onboarding Procedure: Onboarding begins during the application process, where potential employees are provided with information about the organization. After being hired, new employees are initially supported by the HR team for a smooth integration.

Technical Challenges: The current challenge for Wien Digital is to contribute to making Vienna the digitalization capital. The organization is also at the early stages of adopting AI and IoT technologies.

The rapid evolution of mobile and cloud technology is being harnessed for improved access to information and quicker decision-making, always considering data security and integrity. Consolidation of the previously separate ICT infrastructures is ongoing, and security remains a priority.

The "Data Excellence" initiative focuses on enterprise data management, covering metadata management, master and reference data, and logical and physical data models.

Current Technologies: Wien Digital works with a variety of technologies, including mainstream platforms like SAP and Microsoft, as well as open-source technologies such as Liferay. The organization strives for standardization but employs a broad range of technologies. A selection of the technologies used includes C#, .NET, Java, Python, PHP, various databases (Oracle, PostgreSQL, MySQL, SQL Server), GIS tools like Esri ArcGIS, and various platforms and tools for project management, testing, orchestration, and analytics.

Evolution of Technology Since Inception: Wien Digital has initiated a harmonization and consolidation process that will be adapted over the next five years while respecting the lifecycle of technologies.
