Developer Recruiting Guide: “Web-Developer”

The web developer, or web engineer or multimedia programmer, is responsible for the development of web-based software solutions. Responsibilities range from planning the design and architecture, to maintaining and optimizing existing websites and web applications.

The "Web Developer" role is sometimes referred to as a User Interface (UI) Developer, or in larger teams, a User Interface (UI) Engineer. The primary focus of this role usually relates to the front-end portion of a website. In smaller teams, or for simpler applications, the role may encompass multiple areas of development (including responsibilities that otherwise fall to back-end developers). In general, the role focuses on making a website look and behave as the design dictates.

Web developers have a handle on client-side technologies such as HTML, CSS, and JavaScript. The role may also include technologies such as Ruby on Rails, Django, and PHP. Many Web Developers have strong graphic design skills, enabling them to do more than just customize images and graphics using Adobe Photoshop or Illustrator.

To recruit for this role, we have prepared three appropriate interview questions:

Can you describe your workflow when creating a website?

When creating websites, most developers break them down into subsections . Applicants should be able to tell you how much "design" they need to start coding (wireframes, etc.). However, focus primarily on whether the candidate has a comprehensible plan for implementing a website.

What are the responsibilities of a web developer?

A web developer should understand their role and contribution to web design and development. This question will help you figure out how a candidate wants to support the team and what they see as their responsibilities.

Why are you excited about web development?

Did the candidate want to become a web developer at an earlier age? Is this person self-taught? Why a candidate chose web development can help you figure out their level of passion and commitment to the profession.
