The developer interview - don't mention it!

The developer interview - don't mention it!

If you want to prepare for a job interview as a programmer, you should also know what you should not mention. Using testimonials from IT recruiters, we've prepared a list of five topics that shouldn't be discussed at a job interview.

Here you are:

1. Complaints about previous or current employer

This is the mistake most frequently cited by recruiters surveyed. According to her, many applicants complain about their employers, but this casts a negative light on the applicant himself. So if you are asked by the recruiter about the reasons for leaving the previous company, try to answer the question constructively and conclusively. Even if you really feel disadvantaged by your employer, don't criticize them, just try to tell more about yourself. For example, that you want to expand your knowledge and skills and are therefore looking for a new challenge.

2. Private problems and opinions

Both your family and financial problems are not topics that interest the recruiter during an interview. So try not to mention an unpaid loan or an upcoming renovation. Also, remember not to bring up topics like politics or religion the first time you meet them, as these may discourage the recruiter from hiring you. You can certainly discuss these points later on another occasion ;).

3. “Unusual” motivation to start a new job

During the interviews with the various hiring managers, I heard many interesting anecdotes about how some candidates explain their motivation for the new position. For example, when asked “why do you want to work for our company” one applicant answered “my wife wants me to earn more money”. Such an answer could signal a lack of interest to the recruiter, even if it is true :-)

4. Gossip/secrets about previous employers

What you tell about your previous job and employer reflects your attitude towards the job for the recruiter and shows them what to expect if they hire you. This is also the reason why it is very unprofessional or even illegal to reveal secret information about the former employer. Inappropriate gossip can also immediately undermine your chance of having a positive attitude.

5. Phrases from the Internet

As it turns out, using "Google" can do more harm than good. Remember that phrases from online helpers and application training platforms are familiar to most recruiters. So, if you really want to set yourself apart from other candidates, avoid pre-packaged text blocks and sample answers from the internet. Just be honest and prepare well for the interview, then you have done everything right.
