A Data Engineer is responsible for building huge databases to store and sort large amounts of data. Many companies today are taking a very aggressive approach to finding these highly qualified candidates for a vacant position. A bachelor's degree is often the minimum, but a master's degree in the appropriate field is usually required. In some cases, however, solid work experience, can be a substitute for degrees.

Because data engineers must sift through large amounts of data and use programs efficiently to do so, they must have a solid mathematical background in addition to programming.Data Engineers must not only be able to create custom databases from scratch, but also interface with databases from other companies to retrieve the right information for their analyses.

Data Engineers often work with numerous other people in the company, so they must be very good at sticking to schedules to ensure that projects and programs are completed on time and on budget.

They must also have very good communication skills and be able to think outside the box to solve a variety of problems and tasks that may arise. The future outlook for this occupation is quite good and both demand and pay will increase over time.
